So now you've created a character (if not, see the Character Creation post in this forum) and have entered the game (hopefully in Shadowdale Village). So now what? Well here are some tips:
1) First wear your equipment by typing "wear all"
2) To see what you are carrying type "inv" (or just "i")
3) To see what you are wearing, type "eq"
4) To see what wearable slots are empty type "eq missing"
5) To see some information about yourself type "score" (or just "sc")
6) To see the description of the room you are in and its contents, type "look" (or just "l")
7) To move type "n", "e", "s", "w", "u", or "d" to move one room north, east, south, west, up, or down respectively.
8) Start looking at the help files with "help newbie"
9) "Help shadowdale map" will give you a rough layout of Shadowdale Village. (There are maps of other racial hometowns as well. Start by looking at "help map".)
10) To see who else is in the game type "who". (This currently only shows players you are visible to you.)
11) To see what zone you are in and who else is in the zone with you, type "whoz". (This also only shows players who are visible to you.)
12) To speak to someone you see in your zone type "tell <name> <message>"
13) To speak to everyone in your zone type "gossip <message>"
14) Use the map info or help from other players to find the nearest inn. At the innkeeper type "rent". You will exit the game but can immediately re-enter. Doing this will set your home/start location. Trust me, you will want this set before you start adventuring.
15) Finally, seek out your class Guildmaster (GM). He can teach you skills (type "study") and how to use weapons (type "practice"). He will also advance you in levels when you earn enough experience (type "gain"). You can study a skill ("study <skill>") multiple times to improve in it, up to a point. You need only to practice a weapon once ( "practice <weapon>") to be proficient with it.
16) When you decide to leave the game, go back the Inn and rent. If you do not, and just "quit" instead, you will lose all your gear and possessions. They will be left in the room where you were when you quit.
That should get you started. Make sure you use "gossip' ("goss") freely to ask questions. Everyone is happy to help.
